A new study says 23% of all female college students report sexual assault.

One of the largest studies of its kind is reigniting one of America’s ugliest conversations: sexual assault on college campuses. According to a study by the Association of American Universities, 23% of all female college students reported unwanted sexual contact — whether it be kissing, touching, or rape — carried out by force, a threat of force or while the woman was incapacitated by drugs or alcohol. 11% of female college students said the assault included penetration or oral sex.

According to CNN, these findings are sadly consistent with similar studies conducted on sexual assault in college, but what sets it apart is the size of the survey. Over 150,000 students were surveyed from 27 different universities, including all the Ivys except for Princeton.

The breakdown of the numbers gets, somehow, even worse. A full 26% of female college seniors reported sexual assault, exposing the tragic but unsurprising reality that the longer you’re in college, the more likely you are to be attacked. More surprising: the number climbed even higher at some more prestigious universities: 29% at Harvard, 32% at Yale, and a whopping 34% for female seniors at the University of Michigan.

“I think one takeaway is that this problem is a broad problem within society as well as on campus, so I think it’s something all of us have to be concerned about,” said AAU President Hunter Rawlings told CNN.

New Pod Flow: Scribble & Jam, “Artist Matthew Perryman Jones”

Welcome to Episode IV. This week, Dan spends some time with his favorite singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Matthew and Dan talk about panic attacks, growing up in Atlanta, the way music is informed by pain and suffering and the way music gives freedom.

If you have spent any time watching television in the last decade you have most likely heard one of Mattew’s songs on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill and many others. His insightful writing and voice have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, and he is on the short list of songwriters who skillfully weave the deeply philosophical and the vivid utterly human without ever losing sight of either.
