Baltimore police fatally shoot Korryn Gaines, possibly injuring her five-year-old son.

Baltimore woman Korryn Gaines was shot and killed during a standoff outside her apartment. Wanted on a warrant for traffic violations, Gaines responded to her arrest by allegedly pointing a shotgun and threatening to kill the officers. A child believed to be her son was shot during the altercation, though he is expected to survive. Police have yet to confirm whether Gaines or the police shot the boy.

Korryn Gaines (now, #KorrynGaines on social media) was discussed heavily on Twitter last night, with many activists and sympathizers with Black Lives Matter questioning the absence of body camera footage. Authorities have not confirmed if the officers were equipped with body cams in Baltimore Police’s nascent program, and if they were available, they caught video of the mother and son. Additionally, Korryn Gaines’ social media accounts, allegedly active according to Heavy, were all deleted recently, including videos she uploaded to her social accounts documenting the encounter. Last, many are furious that lethal force was used against Gaines while her young son sat on her lap.

A man also wanted by the police fled the apartment holding a 1-year-old, though he was apprehended separately.

The altercation, which police claim lasted for “hours and hours,” ended around 3 pm when Gaines allegedly threatened to shoot the officers. Police killed her at the scene.

New Pod Flow: Scribble & Jam, “Artist Matthew Perryman Jones”

Welcome to Episode IV. This week, Dan spends some time with his favorite singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Matthew and Dan talk about panic attacks, growing up in Atlanta, the way music is informed by pain and suffering and the way music gives freedom.

If you have spent any time watching television in the last decade you have most likely heard one of Mattew’s songs on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill and many others. His insightful writing and voice have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, and he is on the short list of songwriters who skillfully weave the deeply philosophical and the vivid utterly human without ever losing sight of either.
