JJ Abrams mourns the loss of ‘Star Trek’ actor Anton Yelchin: “You were brilliant.”

Anton Yelchin, best known for playing Chekov in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot franchise, has been killed in a tragic car accident outside his home in San Fernando Valley. He was 27 years old.

Yelchin started acting when he was just 9 in his native Russia, getting cast opposite Anthony Hopkins in Hearts in Atlantis and in Steven Spielberg’s Taken series. He also had major roles alongside Emile Hirsch and Justin Timberlake in Alpha Dog and Robert Downey Jr., Ket Dennings and Drake in Charlie Bartlett.

But his most well-known role was unquestionably his note-perfect casting as Pavel Chekov in Star Trek, a role he reprised in 2013’s Stark Trek: Into Darkness and this year’s Star Trek: Beyond, which is set to release in just a few weeks. Abrams took to Twitter this morning to express his sympathy.

“Anton, you were brilliant. You were kind. You were funny as hell, and supremely talented. And you weren’t here nearly long enough. Miss you… JJ”

Yelchin was an uncommonly good actor whose true talents were overlooked (not enough people saw him in the excellent Charlie Bartlett) but once you observed his magnificently expressive face and knack for subtle comedic timing, you figured he was the sort of actor who’d be popping up in unique, offbeat roles for a long time. His death is a huge and shocking loss.

Welcome to Episode IV. This week, Dan spends some time with his favorite singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Matthew and Dan talk about panic attacks, growing up in Atlanta, the way music is informed by pain and suffering and the way music gives freedom.

If you have spent any time watching television in the last decade you have most likely heard one of Mattew’s songs on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill and many others. His insightful writing and voice have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, and he is on the short list of songwriters who skillfully weave the deeply philosophical and the vivid utterly human without ever losing sight of either.

To get his new album Cold Answer, (which features the three songs from him you heard on this episode), visit MPJmusic.com.
