Kevin Durant, the Warriors, and the NBA had a low key, totally nondescript holiday weekend.

*yawn* Is it July 5th already? It was great to have a nice weekend, put the phone away, and grill up some dogs and buns with loved ones. But, hey, it’s NBA free agency season, and I am curious to see where Courtney Lee went. Okay, let’s fire up the ‘ol Twitter feed and…oh…oh my…

Well, so Kevin Durant leaves his Oklahoma City Thunder to sign with the Warriors on a two year, $54.3 million deal! He joins reigning MVP Stephen Curry and All Stars Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, to build a uniquely, young, skilled super-team founded on players in the heart of their primes. This collection of talent’s potential for dominance, as Zach Lowe of ESPN explains, is almost completely unprecedented:

The Warriors will enter next season as massive favorites in the Western Conference. They didn’t just sign Durant, they gutted the only Western Conference team they feared. They do not fear the Spurs. After losing in San Antonio in March, Golden State’s players talked in the locker room about how the Spurs had no chance against them in a seven game-series, per several team sources — about how San Antonio could only manage 87 points even with Iguodala and Bogut in street clothes that night.

They were right to fear the Thunder. Golden State’s road win in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals, after being down 3-1, will live forever as a comeback that changed the foundation of the league. That game made Thompson an NBA immortal. He saved the Warriors’ season — and ultimately nudged Durant away from Oklahoma City.

Now, the Gradient team has been off the grid for a bit, but, we have confidence in the innate goodness of man. Thus, there’s no doubt that Durant’s fans, the good people of Oklahoma City, were happy to cheer on their hero as he exercised his rights as a free American and chooses a new team!

“Trader,” lol. Well, as long as people leave his livelihood and property alo-

Sigh.

New Pod Flow: Scribble & Jam, “Artist Matthew Perryman Jones”

Welcome to Episode IV. This week, Dan spends some time with his favorite singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Matthew and Dan talk about panic attacks, growing up in Atlanta, the way music is informed by pain and suffering and the way music gives freedom.

If you have spent any time watching television in the last decade you have most likely heard one of Mattew’s songs on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill and many others. His insightful writing and voice have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, and he is on the short list of songwriters who skillfully weave the deeply philosophical and the vivid utterly human without ever losing sight of either.

To get his new album Cold Answer, (which features the three songs from him you heard on this episode), visit MPJmusic.com.
