Cable TV has been the best thing that ever happened to Donald Trump’s campaign, and now we are getting bits and pieces of information suggesting he may want to return the favor by creating his own television channel where he’ll get to yell about Muslims to his heart’s content. From Vanity Fair:
“Trump is indeed considering creating his own media business, built on the audience that has supported him thus far in his bid to become the next president of the United States. According to several people briefed on the discussions, the presumptive Republican nominee is examining the opportunity presented by the ‘audience’ currently supporting him. He has also discussed the possibility of launching a ‘mini-media conglomerate’ outside of his existing TV-production business, Trump Productions LLC.”
Over at NY Mag, Jonathan Chait — amongst others — freely speculates that this might have been the plan all along. “Being adored by 30 percent of the country and hated by the rest is a recipe unsuited either for winning nationwide office or selling consumer products,” writes Chait. “What it could well be is a plan to launch an independent media organ.”
If that is indeed the plan, it’s a good one. Trump has spent the past few months investing heavily in a campaign, he has no intention to win in order to start a media company that could make it all back plenty of times over. He’s made no secret of how grumpy he is over the fact that television channels profit off of his appearances on them without he himself getting a cut — what better way to leverage that anger than to put a monopoly on his own TV interviews? Besides, the closest thing he’d have to a competitor is Fox News, and he’s already rendered them an anathema amongst his base. If Trump loses (something that seems increasingly likely), then he has a built-in fanbase of furious millions who will merrily become lifelong viewers.
So, maybe that’s the real endgame here? It’s about the only explanation that makes sense.
