Reebok Finally Made Ripley’s ‘Alien’ Shoes Available to One and All (Except Women).

There are a lot of ways you could commemorate Ripley, Sigourney Weaver’s iconic Alien protagonist. Reebok, for example, has seen fit to celebrate her legacy in a way that Ripley herself would have loved. Except she would not have been able to participate, because of her womanly feet.

See, Reebok finally brought Ripley’s famous footwear to life for a brief run on their website, selling only 426 pairs (36 in the US). But in so doing, they made the curious decision to make them in men’s sizes only. Behold.

The irony of a Ripley shoe available exclusively to men should not need to be spelled out but, somehow, it flew right over the heads of everyone at Reebok so let’s take a moment. Ridley Scott’s Alien famously subverted action movie tropes by casting Weaver as its lead, making her the sort of badass leading lady that was as revolutionary then as it would be today. Ripley is the only woman on a team of astronauts and bests a malevolent, face-sucking, belly-bursting alien entity. The movie itself is replete with symbolism meant to drive home a deeply feminist film disguised as a sci-fi action flick. In Alien, Ripley is far more competent than her male crew members. Her feet, however, are not as large.

So making the shoes for men only (the smallest size was reportedly a men’s 9, which translates to a woman’s 11) betrays a pretty profound lack of understanding of Alien or at the very least of the sort of shoes Ripley, a woman, would wear.

New Pod Flow: Scribble & Jam, “Artist Matthew Perryman Jones”

screen-shot-2016-09-02-at-8-28-21-am-1

Welcome to Episode IV. This week, Dan spends some time with his favorite singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Matthew and Dan talk about panic attacks, growing up in Atlanta, the way music is informed by pain and suffering and the way music gives freedom.

If you have spent any time watching television in the last decade you have most likely heard one of Mattew’s songs on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill and many others. His insightful writing and voice have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, and he is on the short list of songwriters who skillfully weave the deeply philosophical and the vivid utterly human without ever losing sight of either.

To get his new album Cold Answer, (which features the three songs from him you heard on this episode), visit MPJmusic.com.
