There’s a petition to get Jesse Williams fired from Grey’s Anatomy over his BET speech.

As of this writing, 7,500 people really, really mad about “reverse racism” signed a petition to get Jesse Williams fired from Grey’s Anatomy over his stirring, provocative speech given during the BET Awards. The speech, mostly praised by the people that matter, like his black audience or his boss (Grey’s showrunner Shonda Rhimes), was panned via an online petition created through Change.org. It’s creator, Erin Smith, spent her weekend criticizing Williams’ racism towards whites.

Smith wrote that Williams “spewed a racist, hate speech against law enforcement and white people at the BET awards,” referring to his criticism of the police’s capacity to handle white criminals without resorting to gun violence. Williams, who is quick to remind us that she is *not* necessarily white — gosh why would anyone think that? — claimed that she is merely concerned about “equal consequences for racist behavior.”

In a surprising turn of events, but Smith, who-again-is-not-necessarily-white-and-you-need-to-stop-making-assumptions-she-just-wants-to-make-a-difference-who’s-the-Real-Racist-now, included the hashtag #AllLivesMatter in her fight for white equality.

Not all civil rights heroes wear capes. Will Smith’s valiant crusade for justice deter the show from moving forward without Williams?

Probably not.

New Pod Flow: Scribble & Jam, “Artist Matthew Perryman Jones”

Welcome to Episode IV. This week, Dan spends some time with his favorite singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Matthew and Dan talk about panic attacks, growing up in Atlanta, the way music is informed by pain and suffering and the way music gives freedom.

If you have spent any time watching television in the last decade you have most likely heard one of Mattew’s songs on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill and many others. His insightful writing and voice have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, and he is on the short list of songwriters who skillfully weave the deeply philosophical and the vivid utterly human without ever losing sight of either.

To get his new album Cold Answer, (which features the three songs from him you heard on this episode), visit MPJmusic.com.
