Men. They’re the most important part of any institution, even when they are plainly, demonstrably, categorically not. Just ask Raymond Moore, tournament director for the BNP Paribas Open, who knows that behind every great female tennis player there is a longsuffering man carrying them to greatness.
“In my next life when I come back I want to be someone in the WTA, because they ride on the coattails of the men. They don’t make any decisions and they are lucky. They are very, very lucky. If I was a lady player, I’d go down every night on my knees and thank God that Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal were born, because they have carried this sport. They really have.”
Ah, but why would Mr. Moore want to come back as someone in the WTA when he could come back as a big, strong maaaan? What Mr. Moore would do if he were a “lady player” is his own business, but one such lady player has different ideas, and that lady is Serena Williams.
“I don’t think any woman should be down on their knees thanking anybody like that. I think Venus, myself, a number of players — if I could tell you every day how many people say they don’t watch tennis unless they’re watching myself or my sister — I couldn’t even bring up that number. So I don’t think that is a very accurate statement.”
Well, Serena Williams and Raymond Moore are both entitled to their own opinions, but only one of them can be correct. That person is definitely Williams although, if you ask Moore, it’s only because some brilliant genius man decided for her.
