John Oliver introduces Americans to Rodrigo Duerte, “Trump of the East.”

If you’re disappointed in the distinct possibility of a Donald Trump presidency, John Oliver wants you to count your blessings. The Last Week Tonight host exposed Americans to Rodrigo Duterte, a leading candidate in the Philippines elections. Duterte is the current mayor of Davao City and the only politician rivaled by Trump’s brutishness. A brief rundown of Duterte’s greatest hits:

  • Promised himself as a sexual favor to young brides at a mass wedding. If you think that’s bad, Duterte also told the grooms that they wouldn’t be getting lucky because “I’m not a queer” (start from 1:04).
  • Joked about wishing he was the “first” to gang rape a slain missionary. Wait, no, it wasn’t a joke: he meant every word.
  • Called Pope Francis a “son of a bitch” because the papal visit caused traffic delays.
  • Is believed to be behind over 1000 extrajudicial killings since becoming mayor. (Duterte denies it. It’s not “honorable.”)
  • Promised that if he’s elected, he’ll kill five criminals a week.

After reviewing some of Duterte’s infamous behavior, Oliver remarked: “If we say we just want a politician who will tell me what he really thinks, we should specify that that politician not be a total fucking monster.”

Of course, while our local despot in the making trails Hillary Clinton in most polls, Duterte has a commanding lead in his election’s early vote tally. He’s probably going to be the next president of the Philippines.

To all the Americans reading: take stock of all the good gifts in your life, like your country having enough women and Latinos to avoid a Trump election. And for the greatest gift of all, John Oliver, who you can watch below:

New Pod Flow: Scribble & Jam, “Artist Matthew Perryman Jones”

Welcome to Episode IV. This week, Dan spends some time with his favorite singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Matthew and Dan talk about panic attacks, growing up in Atlanta, the way music is informed by pain and suffering and the way music gives freedom.

If you have spent any time watching television in the last decade you have most likely heard one of Mattew’s songs on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill and many others. His insightful writing and voice have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, and he is on the short list of songwriters who skillfully weave the deeply philosophical and the vivid utterly human without ever losing sight of either.
