Ryan Gosling: “I think women are better than men.”
Remember Drive? Nicolas Winding Refn’s hyper-stylish slow burn was hands down the coolest movie of 2011, and catapulted Ryan Gosling from “that Disney Channel guy” to the refreshingly un-problematic, strikingly handsome, girls-want-to-date/be-him, guys-want-to-be/date-him “Hey Girl” movie star he is today. Drive was the rare movie that inflated style so high above substance that it became substantive in the process. In Winding Refn’s hands, a simple plot with what couldn’t have been more than five pages of dialog became something wholly memorable by virtue of its singular vision. It was awesome.
Anyway. Ryan Gosling. He’s promoting his new excellent movie The Nice Guys and during a deep dive interview with Evening Standard, he dropped this gem of a quote: “I think women are better than men. They are stronger, more evolved. You can tell especially when you have daughters and you see their early stages, they are just leaps and bounds beyond boys immediately.”
Well! He won’t be getting any Men’s Rights Activist support with quotes like that, but it’s a very on brand statement for someone who has a happy history of being pro-women, and open about his appreciation for growing up surrounded by women. “When my mother and I walked to the grocery store, men would circle the block in cars,” he went on to say. “It was very, very scary, especially as a young boy. Very predatory – a hunt.”
It’s a good thing Gosling likes women, because he’s got two daughters of his own now — Esmerelda and Amada — with his longtime girlfriend Eva Mendes. He started dating Mendes in 2011 which, hey, was the same year Drive came out. Remember how good Drive was? Let’s watch the trailer.

Welcome to Episode IV. This week, Dan spends some time with his favorite singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Matthew and Dan talk about panic attacks, growing up in Atlanta, the way music is informed by pain and suffering and the way music gives freedom.
If you have spent any time watching television in the last decade you have most likely heard one of Mattew’s songs on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill and many others. His insightful writing and voice have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, and he is on the short list of songwriters who skillfully weave the deeply philosophical and the vivid utterly human without ever losing sight of either.
