Ryan Lochte: Fugitive | Gradient

Ryan Lochte is a fugitive of Brazilian justice.

Ryan Lochte. Olympian. Hero. Dimwit. Victim. FUGITIVE. An Olympian drama has become a twisty Olympian nightmare in which no one knows who to trust. Our hearts and thoughts all inclined to Lochte after we heard his harrowing report of being mugged by nefarious ne’er-do-wells in Rio, but such sympathies may have been premature. Lochte, it seems, is a man on the run. From CNN:

A Brazilian judge has issued a search and seizure warrant for US Olympic swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen as questions emerge about their account of being robbed at gunpoint early Sunday in Rio de Janeiro.

Police arrived Wednesday morning at the Olympic Village to take the swimmers’ passports and gather further testimony from them about the reported robbery, US Olympic Committee spokesman Patrick Sandusky said.
But the athletes were not there.
Lochte, Feigen and fellow teammates Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger all reported being held up in Rio on Sunday night, and Lochte even said someone pointed a gun at his beautiful head.
But according to Brazilian authorities, Lochte and Feigen’s statements and the details they provided didn’t line up. Lochte said there was only one thief, while Feigen said there were several. In addition, officials seemed to think the victims were a bit too cavalier for people who’d just been accosted. “It seems the alleged victims found their physical and psychological integrity were unshaken, even fooling about with each other,” said the judge.
Also, all four athletes appeared to still have their phones and watches, which certainly seemed like things a mugger would have taken. And finally, Lochte’s wallet appeared on an airport x-ray as he left Brazil. At least one report says he’s back in the U.S., but nobody knows for sure.
He is an American fugitive.

New Pod Flow: Scribble & Jam, “Artist Matthew Perryman Jones”

screen-shot-2016-09-02-at-8-28-21-am-1

Welcome to Episode IV. This week, Dan spends some time with his favorite singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Matthew and Dan talk about panic attacks, growing up in Atlanta, the way music is informed by pain and suffering and the way music gives freedom.

If you have spent any time watching television in the last decade you have most likely heard one of Mattew’s songs on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill and many others. His insightful writing and voice have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, and he is on the short list of songwriters who skillfully weave the deeply philosophical and the vivid utterly human without ever losing sight of either.

To get his new album Cold Answer, (which features the three songs from him you heard on this episode), visit MPJmusic.com.
