Uber and Lyfts Legal Woes Continue

Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 8.19.34 AM
SCENE: It’s a late night, and Uber had a few too many mojitos with their homegirl, Lyft. Both are trying not to get another fine on their need to hail a ride to get home. We all make mistakes, but someone should have cut Uber off before sending that drunk text full of petty rebound texts to their ex and misleading information about the accuracy of their driver background checks. Though Uber apologized for the unbecoming behavior and failure to adequately screen drivers (this negligence arguably led to sexual assaults against passengers, and even some alleged kidnappings) the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco were not impressed, reaching a 10 million dollar settlement.

Where was Lyft when all this happened? Lyft, tsk tsk tsk, you were supposed to be the responsible one! You’re usually the one that stays hydrated and takes car keys when Uber had enough. But you weren’t paying attention to your drink limit, or the limits of California independent contractor law, and failed to classify your drivers as employees. Now, your $12 million dollar settlement got rejected on Thursday, and you may owe $126 million dollars in back pay to your staff.

Hopefully, both of these beleaguered ride-sharing services stop going on these benders and start emphasizing fair, non-exploitative labor practices.

New Pod Flow: Scribble & Jam, “Artist Matthew Perryman Jones”

Welcome to Episode IV. This week, Dan spends some time with his favorite singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Matthew and Dan talk about panic attacks, growing up in Atlanta, the way music is informed by pain and suffering and the way music gives freedom.

If you have spent any time watching television in the last decade you have most likely heard one of Mattew’s songs on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill and many others. His insightful writing and voice have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, and he is on the short list of songwriters who skillfully weave the deeply philosophical and the vivid utterly human without ever losing sight of either.
