Your Praises Will Go Up After Watching Chance The Rapper Perform “Blessings.” | Gradient

Your praises will go up after watching Chance the Rapper perform “Blessings.”

Chance the Rapper dropped by “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” to perform “Blessings,” a new single we sincerely hope is from his new mixtape, Chance 3. The performance, drenched in gospel overtones, features a choir decked in all-white robes. Gospel artist, Byron Cage, delivers a sermonette between the Social Experiment’s famous horns. Jamilah Woods blessed the “Tonight Show” audience with the chorus.

Chance has been hinting at a new project for some time. His insta-classic verse on Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam” shouted out the mixtape title, Chance 3. Then, he started dropping new merch, from posters to limited edition snapbacks with the Chicago White Sox.

Astute commentary and spiritual allusions blend beautifully throughout “Blessings” (“Jesus Black, Life ain’t Matter/I know I talked to his daddy/ Said you the man of the house now, look out for your family”), a trait that undoubtedly expected by longtime Chance fans. Jimmy Fallon caught the Spirit so hard; he repeatedly exclaimed, “I didn’t want it to end!” Of course, Fallon loves everyone and everything that appears on his show, so scroll down and decide for yourself. (But seriously: watch the song performance, it’s great.)

New Pod Flow: Scribble & Jam, “Artist Matthew Perryman Jones”

Welcome to Episode IV. This week, Dan spends some time with his favorite singer/songwriter, Matthew Perryman Jones. Matthew and Dan talk about panic attacks, growing up in Atlanta, the way music is informed by pain and suffering and the way music gives freedom.

If you have spent any time watching television in the last decade you have most likely heard one of Mattew’s songs on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill and many others. His insightful writing and voice have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, and he is on the short list of songwriters who skillfully weave the deeply philosophical and the vivid utterly human without ever losing sight of either.
